An immersive story experience like no other.

Wednesday 28th May

9:00 am - 4:00 pm

Therfield First School

Ages 5-11

An immersive story experience like no other.

Curious Billy Bunny wants to watch Mrs Woodpecker’s eggs hatch. Will he find a way to see them before the chicks arrive?

Join the adventure as Billy tries different ways to see into the woodpecker nest.

Our story will grow throughout the day, using the children’s natural crafts and wonderful creativity to bring it to life.

Our magical day begins with welcoming the children and starting our story in Therfield's wonderful mindfulness garden. We weave in short mindfulness activities and encourage children to share their ideas as we tell the start of the story.

The day follows with a series of activities that relate to the story, helping to bring it to life and allowing it to grow! At the end of the day we come together for the end of the story with the children contributing their ideas, arts and crafts, and even acting some parts out.

Key highlights include:

  • Captivating storytelling
  • Weaving in emotional intelligence
  • Short mindfulness activities
  • Natural arts and crafts
  • Challenges and treasure hunts
  • Den building
  • Nest making
  • Water play
  • Puppetry, shows, and dancing

Your child will enjoy a full day of immersive storytelling, wonder, and creativity. All set in Therfield First School's wonderful grounds!

Check out 'Our Day!' (on the right) for a full breakdown of our wonderful day.

FAQ:

My child doesn't go to Therfield First School. Can they come?

Absolutely! All children aged 5-11yrs are very welcome. They do not need to be a Therfield pupil.

What do we need to bring?

- Named water bottle

- Packed lunch (no fizzy drinks, sweets, chocolate or nuts), including a snack for break time.

- Weather appropriate clothing (sunhat, raincoat)

- Please apply suncream prior to your child's arrival. Children may top their suncream up themselves, but we will not be able to do it for them.

My child doesn't know anyone going. Will they be left out?

Your child will be welcomed in from the moment they come to Story Meadow. We are an extremely friendly team and places are limited to 32 which means we all get to know each other very quickly. We are also deliberately overstaffed which means we have excellent staff-to-children ratios (1:7) and will have plenty of eyes to make sure everyone is having a brilliant time all day long!

What will happen if it rains?

Our special day will go ahead even in the rain or cold. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather. In hot weather, activities will take place in the shady areas of the school field. In extreme cases, sessions may need to move indoors.

  • Day Plan

    9:00 am - Children Arrive

Children sign in and take their name label. We start the day together in the mindfulness garden, where children are encouraged to share their favourite animal and to add a picture to their label before putting it on.

    9:15 am - Story

Billy Bunny and the Woodpecker Nest. We share the first part of the story and pause at the first challenge (Billy can’t see because it’s too high). Children are asked to share their ideas, knowledge and ‘what will happen next?’

9:30 am - Play with small world parts.

Children can use natural materials to build and play. Often children are inspired by the story, but this is left very free and children can explore their natural environment. How high can we build? How could Billy reach another way? How can we use pulleys, buckets, twine?

10:00 am - Next part of story

(Billy sees Little Fox and he’s built a raft to look at the fish. Billy gets cheered up a bit and has a ride with Little Fox.). Again, children are encouraged to contribute to the story, imagine how our characters feel and share what they would do.

    10:15 am - Raft building

Children use sticks, bark, leaves to create rafts that float. Can they hold a small toy? Can they improve their raft? How can you tie the raft? Elastic bands, string, clips.

11:00 am - Snack and toilet.

11:15 am - Next part of story

(Billy decides to build a treehouse.)

    Carousel of activities:

    • Treehouse map drawing
    • Loose parts play
    • Create own binoculars.
    • Use binoculars available for bird spotting
    • Bird books and cards available for reference

    12:30 pm - Lunchtime

Sit in the shade of the mindfulness garden together with our lunch.

13:00 pm - Write up story/Free play of activities available.

Children are encouraged to write/draw up the story or a similar one to create their own small book. They are encouraged to write/draw their ending.

This is also an opportunity to go back to any activities they enjoyed and want to spend more time on - everything will still be out and available.

14:00 - Final part of the story

(Billy and Lily watch the eggs hatch and it isn’t long before the little birds are joining in and creating even more details for the treehouse.)

Children make nests and/or puppets of woodpecker chicks.

    14:45 - Tidy up time

15:00 - Practice retelling the story.

Children use puppets to tell their own versions of the story. Maybe a completely different Billy Bunny story. Maybe the same story we’ve had.

We take it in turns to show each other. We enjoy watching each other’s shows and sharing ideas.

    15:45 - Prep for home.

Bags, toilet, crafts, sing a song, and share a favourite moment.

    16:00 - Hometime.
